Ergonomics is a matching process
An ergonomic chair is not simply a product category. It is part of a process of fitting furniture and equipment to the user and the task. Adjustability creates options, but users still need to know how and when to use the controls.
A chair with ten controls is not automatically better than a simpler chair. The useful question is whether its controls solve real fit and task problems.
Core adjustments
Seat height affects foot support and the relationship between the elbows and work surface. Seat-depth adjustment helps support the thighs without pressing behind the knees. Backrest and lumbar adjustments help the back contact the chair in a comfortable position.
Armrests can reduce unsupported shoulder loading when they are correctly positioned, but armrests that are too high, wide, or long may interfere with the desk.
Recline and movement
A recline mechanism allows the user to vary posture rather than remaining fixed. Tilt tension changes how much force is needed to recline, while a tilt lock limits or holds movement at selected positions.
Movement should feel controlled and stable. A lock is not a substitute for a mechanism that supports the user throughout its range.
Features that need context
Headrests can be useful for some reclined tasks but may push the head forward if poorly placed. Thick padding may feel soft initially yet reduce breathability or change shape over time. Mesh can improve airflow, but the frame and edge design still affect comfort.
Choose features based on measurements and work habits, not the number of adjustment levers.
Questions to ask before deciding

- Can the controls be reached and understood during normal work?
- Do armrests, base, and recline fit the room?
- What testing, warranty, parts, and return evidence is available?
- Can the chair be tried with realistic tasks?
