What standards can tell you

Office-chair standards specify laboratory tests for areas such as stability, strength, durability, and structural adequacy. They do not guarantee that a chair will fit every user or workstation.

Ask whether the exact model and configuration were tested by a qualified laboratory.

General-purpose and specialized seating

Different standards can apply to general-purpose office chairs, larger-occupant chairs, educational seating, lounge seating, and emissions. A standard should match the product category.

Do not assume one certification covers every component or material claim.

Safe use still matters

Use the chair on a suitable floor, keep all casters or glides installed, follow assembly instructions, and do not stand on the seat or use armrests as steps.

Stop using a chair that has structural cracks, uncontrolled recline, a loose base, or a failing cylinder.

Documentation is a quality signal

Clear manuals, part numbers, test references, warranty terms, and maintenance guidance make it easier to assess and maintain a chair.
