Height changes the safety and fit requirements

Drafting chairs use taller cylinders and usually include a foot ring. The foot ring should be stable, adjustable where possible, and large enough to support the feet.

A standard chair raised beyond its intended range is not a substitute for purpose-designed elevated seating.

Check the work surface

Measure the surface height and underside clearance. Confirm that the chair can reach the task while leaving space for thighs and knees.

Higher seating may need different armrest and backrest choices depending on whether the task is typing, drawing, assembly, or customer service.

Base and movement

A five-point base helps stability, but elevated seats still require careful entry and exit. Check caster type, floor slope, and whether glides are preferable for the task.

Do not use the foot ring as a step.

Sit-stand use

For intermittent perching at a sit-stand desk, a stool or leaning seat may be appropriate. It should still be stable and should not replace movement or task variation.

Practical checkWrite down the chair's actual adjustment ranges and compare them with the real workstation. Do not rely on category labels alone.

Questions to ask before deciding

  • Does the published range fit the user and desk?
  • Can the controls be reached and understood during normal work?
  • Do armrests, base, and recline fit the room?
  • What testing, warranty, parts, and return evidence is available?
  • Can the chair be tried with realistic tasks?
